VIII International Marathon of Friendship "Grodno-Druskininkai"

On Sunday, July 15 2018, the eighth Marathon of Friendship "Grodno-Druskininkai" took place. This time the participants started in Lithuania, and finished in Grodno. To participate in the VIII International Druskininkai-Grodno Friendship Marathon, 134 professional athletes and runners from 11 countries registered. 97 marathoners  represented Great Britain, Denmark, Belarus, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, France, the Netherlands, Estonia entered the starting corridor on the Vilnius alley of the famous Lithuanian resort. All of them, despite the torrential rain and its shallow scattering for 30-35 km, safely reached the finish line at the Ice Palace in Grodno and met the control limit of time - six hours.

To ensure athletes comfortable conditions, on the track worked more than fifty judges and volunteers.  The most important expectation from the marathon is not records and figures, but strengthening of friendship between people and countries.

For the first time in the history of the friendship marathon, the victory was won  Grodno runner Igor Teteryukov with time: 02: 33: 52.18. The second place was taken by Alexander Koshur 02: 37: 35.51 from Baranovichi (Belarus), and on the third on line was Gennady Lavoronok with 02: 38: 44.75 from Berezino (Belarus).

Among women successfully debuted 38-year-old Karolina Vasnievska from Poland who won the first place with  02: 58: 12.97. The second place was taken by Alyona Shumik 02: 58: 52.40 from Brest, and Inessa Salkevich 03: 06: 49.26 from Novopolotsk (both from Belarus).

Winners in absolute classification  received 500 dollars of prize money, for the second place - 400, and for third place - 300 dollars. Winners were determined among men and women separately, all in the absolute classification and additionally  in the age groups 18-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60 yars and older. All participants who reached the finish line were awarded with unique medals. Individual awards were provided for the winners in the absolute classification.

Legend and participant of all eight Belarusian-Lithuanian marathons 76-year-old Peter Silkin from Lithuania showed the 78th result and overcame the distance with 4: 27.40.26. The youngest marathon runner this time was Patrick Voitechowski from Lithuania, who will turn only 19 in December. At the finish he came with the 87th result (4: 56.15.06).

Several honored guests took part in the awarding ceremony of the Marathon. The Belarusian side represented Georgy Katulin, the secretary general of the National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Belarus along with the  heads of the law enforcement agencies of the Grodno region, which provided the organization of the marathon. The Lithuanian side was represented by the founder of the international friendship marathon Vytautas Lučinskas, the chairman of the Public Association "Sportbalt".

The holiday ended with a colorful performance of the national ensemble "Gorodnitsa", which was especially liked by foreign guests, they used a lot of gigabytes to shoot their performance.

Participants and guests  wished many thanks to the organizers and agreed  to meet in the next year.
